Professor Yukihiko Matsumura, Director of our Center, received the Johannes Linneborn Prize at the 34th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE2026), held in The Hague, the Netherlands, from May 19 to 22, 2026.
The Linneborn Prize is a prestigious international award established by the European Commission in 1994. It is presented annually to researchers and engineers who have made outstanding long-term contributions to the development of energy from biomass. Named after Johannes Linneborn, a pioneer of wood gasification technology, the prize has been awarded to only a limited number of distinguished individuals worldwide.
Professor Matsumura was recognized for his long-standing research achievements in chemical heat pumps, supercritical water gasification of biomass, and hydrothermal processing technologies, as well as for his contributions to international academic collaboration. He has played an important role in strengthening cooperation among the Japanese, Asian, and European research communities and has continuously contributed to the advancement of biomass research and international collaboration in this field.
This award represents significant international recognition of Japan’s scientific and academic contributions to biomass research and highlights the global impact of Japanese biomass research activities.
